2021 _ knitted bioyarns

Exhibited: Dutch Design Week 2021 ; Latomeio, Leonidio, Greece 2021

Knitted Anamnesis is a textile trace formed from ash collected from trees burned during the 2021 Mediterranean wildfires. The project responds to the ecological destruction of the forest by transforming its remains into bio-yarns, which are knitted into fragile skins for the damaged trees. Through this process, the work holds memory, loss, and resilience within the material itself.

Ash was gathered from two nearby burned sites, sifted on location, and mixed into an alginate-based hydrogel to create bio-yarns. The yarns were knitted into textile skins and placed back onto the trees from which the material was collected. As they dried, the textiles took the form of the burnt trunks, becoming moulds of absence, survival, and ecological memory.
